Unilever × Whale | The Future Digital Store

As one of the world's leading fast-moving consumer goods giants, Unilever has been actively advancing its digital retail transformation. In early 2019, Whale introduced the "Future Digital Store" initiative at Unilever’s second Innovation Day, attracting attention from multiple business units and marking the beginning of a collaborative partnership between the two companies. By September 2020, Unilever had deployed Whale SpaceSight across multiple major retail supermarket locations.

Whale supports Unilever in achieving key offline retail objectives—such as increasing customer dwell time, enhancing advertising impact, and converting in-store shoppers into online members.

Using SpaceSight, CV cameras detect customer presence as they approach product shelves, capturing traffic data and analyzing shopper profiles and behavior in real time. Based on these insights, screens display personalized greetings and product recommendations—enabling truly tailored, "one-to-one" precision marketing.

Interactive smart screens serve as virtual shopping assistants, displaying product-related promotions and marketing information. By analyzing multidimensional data—such as shopping preferences and browsing paths—through the Whale Alivia, the system pushes personalized product discounts to customers. At checkout, shoppers can scan a QR code on the screen to complete mobile payment and choose delivery options: take the product immediately or have it shipped directly.

Beyond optimizing the customer purchasing experience, Whale has also transformed traditional store operations. Through its proprietary Whale Alivia, store operators can leverage data-driven insights to enhance operational efficiency and drive business growth.

Unilever remains committed to exploring cutting-edge technology and business innovation, continuously challenging new retail models while maintaining strong collaboration with emerging tech partners to achieve shared success through co-creation.
